The 3rd edition of Jarocin Festival took place on 24-26 August 1982. It was one of the very few music events that took place during the martial law declared in December 1981. This was not the only aspect that made it unique. For the first time in its history, there was a significant number of bands expressing themselves through alternative music. The explosion of wave and punk had become a reality and it happened only a few months after the General’s announcement that the country was on the precipice. A generation confronted with curfews, detentions, restrictions and the presence of the army on the streets found their outlet, and Jarocin suddenly became the place to articulate them. The visible and distinctive representation of ‘new wave’ bands and their audience was to change the festival forever.
Unlike later editions of the festival, not many recordings from 1982 have survived. Most of them have been irretrievably lost or destroyed. Fragments of live sets from our field of interest were preserved thanks to radio material from the ‘Muzyka Młodej Generacji’ (Music of the Young Generation) radio-show hosted by Piotr Nagłowski on Polish Radio Programme III. It regularly featured punk and new wave bands. Radio-show significantly contributed to the popularisation of new music. This compilation was created thanks to the survived recordings presented in it.Thus, we have a unique opportunity to present bands oscillating in the areas from post-punk/new wave to early hardcore-punk, who performed during the 1982 edition of the festival:
KONTROLA W. (Zdunska Wola) – the full name of KONTROLA WŁADZY. In 1985 it transformed into the well-known wave band KOSMETYKI MRS. PINKI; SS-20 from Warsaw – forced to change their name and then acting as DEZERTER continuously for the next four decades; well-known Toruń’s REJESTRACJA (full name REJESTRACJA PRZEDPOBOROWA) and BIKINI. Already then cult among punx WC from Miastko (or WYIDEALIZOWANA CIEMNOŚĆ).The compilation ends with a little less known groups CORPUS X (Szczecin, composed by Dzidek – later Garaż zine and Jimmy Jazz Records) and DETONATOR (Łódź, composed by Guma – later MOSKWA). Four of these bands appearing officially on vinyl for the first time. A sign of the times is the fact that, of these seven bands, three of them had to shorten or change their names due to censorship problems.
‘Jarocin “82” compilation documents a landmark moment in the history of the festival and the domestic music scene.
The album comes with a gatefold cover, inner sleeve with lyrics of the bands, extensive booklet with articles by Robert Jarosz and Piotr Nagłowski (RIP), photos and festival documents. Mastering Studio As One.
